SPRING 2009 - featuring 'fleas spring into action!'

FLEAS SPRING INTO ACTION

We are now in the month of May which means its “Flea Awareness Month”……..this month we are offering TWO Frontline Combo pipettes FREE when you purchase a SIX pack for your dog or cat.

Fleas are a very common problem and all our pets will suffer with these nasty critters at some stage of their life so it is best to keep them under control at all times. Fleas cause irritation and skin problems for both you and your pet. Some pets develop Flea Allergy Dermatitis—a nasty skin reaction to the flea bite. Fleas can carry tapeworms which infect your pets so ensure your worming protocol is up to date; we recommend you worm your pet every 3 months. Adult fleas on your pet only accounts for 5% of the whole infestation! The other 95% consists of flea eggs, larvae & pupae that can spread around your home. A warm house provides the perfect breeding ground so with central heating fleas are a problem all year round.

TAKE CONTROL…..using Frontline Combo will eliminate fleas, ticks & biting lice. The difference between Frontline Combo and Frontline is the Combo version inhibits the development of the flea eggs, flea larvae and pupae thus preventing contamination of your home. Ticks are another nasty critter that can cause the transmission of serious diseases such as Lyme Disease. As we live in a relatively rural area with plenty of woodlands, bracken and long grass areas, tick control for our dogs is very important.

Listen out for “Freddie Flea” on your local radio station The Bay.

THE MONTH OF JUNE IS VACCINATION AMNESTY

NATIONAL PET MONTH - 4th APRIL - 4TH MAY 2009

To raise awareness of National Pet Month Vicky Jones our senior vet nurse at Milnthorpe organised a sponsored dog walk on Sunday 26th April at 2pm. Luckily the weather was kind with the sun shining as around 40 people turned up outside the Milnthorpe surgery. To add to the organised chaos were 15 dogs all eager to make a start on the 4 mile walk. Five of the dogs were from Milnthorpe Kennels looking for new homes and wore red ribbons; sadly none of these dogs found a new home so if you are interested in giving a dog a new home please contact Chris Norman on 015395 62665.

The walk was a huge success and raised £125 which will be divided between Animalcare & Wolfwood Kennels. A large bag of dog food was purchased for the rescue dogs who attended as they had certainly worked up an appetite. There was one dog in particular that touched everyone's hearts and that was little “Minnie” a delightful terrier who is 12 years old and has been looking for a home for many months but is still yet to find the perfect home.

Vicky has also been kept busy giving pet healthcare talks to children from the local primary school. The children came along to our Milnthorpe surgery for a tour and were delighted to meet Fen the dog, Fred the ferret, Bubbles the cat and two guinea pigs!

Also during National Pet Month Kim our student vet nurse at Morecambe organised a sponsored car wash with the help of her colleagues. They washed vehicles of all shapes and sizes from white vans to an Audi TT! So whilst the clients were having their pets looked after by the vet, the nurses were making their vehicles squeaky clean. Luckily the weather stayed fine and everyone had lots of fun.

Monies raised totalled £50.43 which we have donated to Cats Protection League with whom we work closely with neutering, vaccinating and treating the homeless cats.

Well Done to everyone that took part maybe next year we will do a sponsored dog wash?!

RACE FOR LIFE

Heather Binks our receptionist at Lancaster and Kirsty Pearson one of our qualified nurses are taking part in this years Race For Life on Sunday 12th July at Salt Ayre. This is a 5km course which if your feeling energetic can run or if you prefer just take a Sunday stroll.

Heather is aiming to raise £2000 for Cancer Research…….so when you are popping into one of our surgeries please spare some change and make a donation for this very worthy cause. We wish them both the best of good luck.

STAFF PAST & PRESENT

……..After more than 20 years working for Bay Vets Mrs Slater has decided to hang up her stethoscope and enjoy retirement to the full. Mrs Slater has worked at both our Morecambe and Milnthorpe surgeries and we know many of you will miss her as indeed we will. The Milnthorpe surgery will now have three veterinary surgeons Eleanor Skinn, Nishi Jani and Louise Kelly working there on a rota basis providing plenty of consulting and operating time for your convenience.

We welcome two new members to our team…. Katie Lawson—Auxiliary Nurse - Katie previously worked in a practice in Preston but has been a regular face at Bay Vets completing work experience with us. Katie has recently completed a National Diploma in Animal Management and hopes to eventually qualify as a vet nurse. Katie is a local girl living on a farm in Condor Green with her two pet sheep Dolly & Doris and her two cats Charlie & Alfie. Her main interests are of course animals….as well as walking, running and cycling; she will definitely be kept on her toes working for us as each day brings lots interesting cases.

Nishi Jani—Veterinary Surgeon - Nishi recently graduated from The Royal College, London and started working for us a few months ago. After originally looking for a job in the midlands, where she grew up, she heard about our vacancy through Louise Kelly, who she had worked with as a student. Nishi is really enjoying the beautiful scenery here and everyone has made her feel really welcome. Nishi enjoys all aspects of small animal work but has a particular interest in medical cases. In her spare time she enjoys walking, travelling and socialising with friends. Nishi enjoys new challenges and after she graduated she went dog sledging across Norway, in aid of Diabetes UK!
